BLACKFLY

A unified technology platform for unmanned systems
Unmanned aerial systems
Research
BLACKFLY is Darlein Defense’s modular hardware and software ecosystem for building, integrating, configuring, and maintaining unmanned platforms.

About the project

The project brings together unified electronic components, software, computing modules, sensors, development tools, and digital infrastructure for managing the life cycle of unmanned systems.
BLACKFLY is built on common principles of architecture, compatibility, and reuse of engineering solutions.
From an experimental prototype to a family of production models — BLACKFLY is meant to reduce the need to develop the same components over and over and to create a common technology foundation for a range of unmanned platforms.

Your platform. Our technology foundation

Different vehicles. One architecture
Developing an unmanned system requires combining many hardware and software components.
Even when using off-the-shelf solutions, engineers have to deal with hardware compatibility, software integration, diagnostics, and support for different configurations.
BLACKFLY offers a systematic approach.
Instead of creating a separate electronic architecture for each new product, it establishes a single modular platform with documented interfaces, compatible components, and configuration management tools.
This lets engineering resources focus on developing the product itself, building on a reusable technology foundation.

Modules, kits, and software

Six components of a unified ecosystem
01

COMPONENTS

Unified hardware modules
A catalog of compatible electronic components and subsystems for integration into unmanned platforms.
The modular approach involves standardizing interfaces, documentation, and compatibility requirements.
Main areas
Flight — flight control computing components.
Propulsion — power plant interfaces.
Power — power supply and energy system monitoring.
Vision — cameras and image processing systems.
Link — communication interfaces.
Compute — onboard computing modules.
Navigation — navigation components.
Sensors — sensors and measurement systems.
Payload — interfaces for compatible additional equipment.
02

KITS

Ready-made integration kits
Predefined sets of compatible components for research, educational, and engineering projects.
Kits may include electronic modules, the necessary interfaces, software components, and documentation.
Different configurations are planned for compact and larger unmanned platforms.
03

PLATFORM

BLACKFLY software environment
A single software interface for configuring compatible hardware, diagnostics, updating software components, and managing technical data.
Planned capabilities
Detection of connected modules.
Component status display.
Software version management.
Diagnostics and error logging.
Saving configurations.
Exporting technical reports.
Hardware documentation management.
04

CONFIGURATOR

Digital platform configurator
A tool for designing the hardware set and pre-checking component compatibility.
The user builds a configuration from available modules, gets information on their characteristics and limitations, saves the system composition, and generates a specification.
The configurator allows previously prepared configurations to be reused.
05

SDK & API

Open integration architecture
Software tools for developers, electronics manufacturers, and technology partners.
Open interfaces make it possible to grow the ecosystem without having to disclose the source code of its core.
Envisioned capabilities
Documented APIs.
SDK for third-party developers.
Connection of compatible sensors.
Development of software extensions.
Integration of external information systems.
Creation of custom diagnostic tools.
Access management for programming interfaces.
06

DEVICE ID

Digital device passport
Each compatible platform will be able to have a digital record containing information on its hardware composition and maintenance history.
Planned data
Device identifier.
Model and hardware revision.
Installed components.
Software versions.
Configuration change history.
Diagnostic results.
Maintenance log.
Information on compatible spare components.

Our own unmanned platforms

BLACKFLY — the technology core of Darlein Defense’s unmanned systems area
Beyond developing a universal component ecosystem, Darlein Defense sees BLACKFLY as the technology foundation for future families of its own unmanned vehicles.
Various classes of platforms are envisioned within this area.
01 / 04

SCOUT

Compact unmanned systems for observation, environmental research, and capturing visual data.
02 / 04

MICRONE

Miniature unmanned platforms with an emphasis on compactness, portability, and the integration of small-form-factor electronics.
03 / 04

LITTLEONE

Lightweight multipurpose unmanned platforms with a modular architecture and the ability to mount compatible equipment.
04 / 04

HEAVYONE

A prospective line of larger unmanned platforms, with expanded hardware integration capabilities and a scalable hardware architecture.
A common technology foundation makes it possible to treat these families as parts of one engineering ecosystem rather than as independent projects.
