BACKEYE

See more. Operate with more confidence
Robotics and external view systems
Research
BACKEYE is an advanced external view system for military ground vehicles and remotely operated robotic platforms.

About the project

At the heart of the project is a compact unmanned aircraft with a camera, designed to provide an additional viewpoint on the vehicle and its surroundings.
The system combines an aerial video module, an onboard docking station, display tools, and software integration with the Darlein Defense digital environment.
BACKEYE supplements the vehicle’s onboard cameras with a third-person view, allowing the operator to assess the vehicle’s position, its dimensions, and surrounding objects in a single interface.
BACKEYE is an additional viewpoint that becomes part of the vehicle.

See the whole vehicle

A new perspective on ground vehicle control
Onboard cameras and viewing devices show the surroundings from points mounted directly on the vehicle’s hull.
Such images do not always make it possible to see the platform itself, its dimensions, and its position relative to surrounding objects at the same time.
BACKEYE explores the concept of an additional external view using a compact aerial video module.
The resulting image can supplement data from onboard cameras and the vehicle’s technical readings, giving a clearer picture of its position.
Instead of several independent information sources — a single digital observation environment.

Third-person view

Six components of one system
01

DRONE

Compact aerial video module
A small unmanned platform with an integrated camera, designed to provide an additional visual angle.
Planned development areas
Compact modular design.
Video camera integration.
Digital component diagnostics.
Compatibility with the onboard docking station.
Unified electronics interfaces.
Option to use common BLACKFLY components.
02

PERSPECTIVE

Additional viewing angles
A software concept for displaying images from various external viewpoints.
The availability of specific angles depends on the equipment design and operating conditions.
03

DOCK

Onboard storage and service station
A vehicle-integrated module for housing and servicing compatible aerial video devices.
The planned architecture provides for
Protected device storage.
Electrical connection interfaces.
Battery condition monitoring.
Technical diagnostics.
Records of installed modules.
Data transfer to the vehicle’s digital system.
04

MULTI-UNIT

Multiple video modules in one system
A concept for using several compatible aerial cameras as part of a single equipment set.
The software infrastructure provides for individual device records, display of their technical condition, and maintenance history.
05

POSITIONING

Spatial referencing of the image
Research into methods for matching the external camera image with the vehicle’s geometry and available information about its position.
The goal is to provide a clear display of the relative positions of the vehicle and visible objects.
06

DATA FUSION

Video and technical information in one interface
Combining video streams with approved data from a compatible ground platform.
The system is planned to display
Onboard camera images.
The external video stream.
Equipment technical condition.
Available diagnostic messages.
Information on connected devices.
Docking station status.

Movement, inspection, and work

Three BACKEYE use scenarios
01 / 03

Clearance checks

The whole vehicle in view
An additional external angle makes it possible to visually assess the vehicle’s position relative to surrounding objects.
The concept is aimed at improving visibility when working with large and remotely operated platforms.
02 / 03

Movement monitoring

External view as a supplement to onboard cameras
The operator gets an additional image source to monitor the vehicle’s position and changes in its surroundings.
03 / 03

External technical inspection

Look at the vehicle from the outside
The aerial video module can be considered a tool for remote visual inspection of the vehicle’s accessible exterior elements.
The images obtained are used to assess the visible condition of the equipment and for subsequent technical analysis.
